Heavy 4WD Unit Standard Training
Our course is designed to build drivers' knowledge and practical skill in the characteristics and operation of a Heavy Four-Wheel Drive, benchmarked against unit standards 1737 and 1738.
Ideal for trainees:
- Have limited experience
- Need to complete specific unit standards for compliance training
- Haven't done any compliance refresher training in the last five years (recommended)
Practical Assessment includes:
- Conducting thorough pre- and post-vehicle checks
- Understanding and using vehicle technology and drive modes specific to vehicles available on site
- How tyre pressures and tread design affect traction and handling
- Preparing a heavy vehicle for off-road driving (1738)
- Preparing and transitioning a heavy vehicle from sealed to unsealed road surface (1737)
- Techniques for driving on low-friction surfaces
- Identifying potential hazards that affect vehicle design, stability and control
- Applying risk-reducing driving techniques across uneven ground, downhill and uphill slopes, side slopes, and water crossings (venue dependent)
This course includes practical training and assessment, with some theory planning completed in the field.
Prerequisites

Drivers must hold a current full driver licence appropriate to the class of vehicle being driven.
Course Numbers and Pricing
- Cost: $3,000 + GST (Group rate, up to 4 trainees)
- Practical site hire from $250 + GST per day.
- Travel to the practical venue is required.
What to expect on the day
The course includes a day of theory and practical training, covering elements relating to:
- 1737: Drive a heavy vehicle on unsealed road surfaces.
- 1738: Drive a heavy vehicle in an off-road environment.
Vehicles
- Vehicles are the client's responsibility to supply (ideally one vehicle per 1–2 trainees).
What happens after you finish the course
We will register applicable unit standards and issue your electronic Certificate of Achievement.
